We will be using meeting rooms on the second floor. The schedule of the Mini-workshop can be found at: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/MiniWorkshopSchedule_GEM2009.pdf ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Mini-workshop Session for Focus Group " Substorm Expansion Onset: The First 10 Minutes" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vassilis Angelopoulos , Shin Ohtani , Kazuo Shiokawa , and Andrei Runov The GEM Focus Group on "Substorm Expansion Onset: The First 10 Minutes" will have a session at this coming GEM mini-workshop in San Francisco: Date: December 13 (Sunday) Time: 2:00 - 3:30 PM Place: Check http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki as we get closer to AGU time. Description of Focus Group: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/FG12._Substorm_Expansion_Onset:_ The_First_10_Minutes In the 2009 Summer Workshop we discussed substorm initiation processes focusing on four issues and an update on the discussions exists on p17 of: http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/GEMstone/GEMstone_Vol19_No1.pdf At this mini-workshop we will plan ahead and identify the most important issues to be discussed at the 2010 Summer Workshop, and we will start to plan tangible goals for the next 2-3 years. Tentative topic/goals groupings – to be solidified - for Summer 2010 are: 1. Onset timing: observations/theory/simulations 2. How do midtail onset signatures propagate to near Earth and to the ground? 3. Ground-space mapping of physical processes before/during/after onset 4. Substorm processes near transition between stretched and dipole field lines We invite people who are interested in any of those items to participate in discussion, and we welcome suggestions for the next summer workshop for enhanced science returns. Those who are interested in making a brief presentation with one or two viewgraphs (limit=2) are encouraged to contact the conveners for advanced scheduling. Please also contact the conveners for additional information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Mini-workshop Session for Focus Group "Plasma Entry and Tranport into and within the Magnetotail (PET)" - Solicitation of Contribution ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Antonius Otto , Jay R. Johnson , and Simon Wing We would like to hold a planning session for the PET focus group at the upcoming mini-GEM in San Francisco on the Sunday before AGU on Dec 13, 2009 04:30-05:30 pm at the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel located at 50 Third Street. PET focus group is interested in (1) solar wind entry and (2) tail transport. A more detailed description of the PET focus group's objectives can be found at http://www.spaceplasma.unh.edu/~jraeder/GEM/index.php?n=Main.Bylaws. Please let us know, if you would like to give a presentation. In order to avoid duplicating our efforts at AGU, the sessions will be held in a workshop-style, in which participants will discuss in a "round-table fashion" what topics or subtopics should be relevant/interesting to the PET focus group. AGU style talks are strongly discouraged. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Mini-workshop Session for Focus Group "Physical Processes in the Cusps: Plasma Transport and Energization" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: K.J. Trattner, N. Omidi and D. Sibeck (Conveners) A mini Gem session on physical processes in the cusp will be held at the Westin San Francisco Market Street Hotel (2nd floor Franciscan II conference room) located on 50 Third Street on Sunday December 13 from 12 to 2 pm. The main objective of this session is to utilize observations, modeling, and theory of the cusp and its role in particle acceleration and plasma transport to assess the current status of the field and forge collaborative efforts towards addressing outstanding issues during the 2010 summer GEM workshop in Snowmass, Colorado. Topics to be discussed include 1. Plasma transport into the cusp. 2. Energization of ions in diamagnetic cavities. 3. Origin of waves observed in the cusp and their role in particle scattering and acceleration. 4. Interaction of FTE’s with the cusp. 5. The source region of energetic ions and electrons observed in the cusp. 6. Ionospheric signatures of such processes such as Poleward Moving Auroral Forms Those interested in these topics are invited to attend and contribute to this session by showing a few slides and/or participation in the discussions. Please send us your suggestions at your earliest convenience to allow adequate planning for the session.
