Mini-workshop Session for GEM Focus Group on "Diffuse Auroral Precipitation" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: B. Ni, and R. M. Thorne (Conveners) A mini Gem session devoted to diffuse auroral precipitation will be held at the Westin San Francisco Market Street Hotel (2nd floor Cornell conference room) located at 50 Third Street on Sunday December 13 from 12 to 1.30 pm. Topics to be discussed include: 1. The global structure of diffuse auroral precipitation and its variability with geomagnetic activity. 2. Small scale structure and dynamic variability of diffuse auroral precipitation. 3. The physical mechanisms for electron and ion scattering. 4. Improved model of the magnetospheric waves responsible for plasma sheet electron scattering. 5. Detailed correlation investigation between diffuse auroral precipitation and plasma wave activity 6. Plans for the June 2010 GEM sessions. Those interested in these topics are invited to attend and contribute to the session by showing a few slides and participating in the discussions. If you intend to participate in the session or wish to add other topics for discussion, please send a title of your presentation to Binbin Ni (bbni@atmos.ucla.edu ) who will be coordinating the mini session. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Solicitation of Contributions to the "Near Earth Magnetosphere: Plasma, fields and coupling" focus group session at the GEM 2009 Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Focus Group co-chairs: Sorin Zaharia , Stan Sazykin and Benoit Lavraud The Near Earth Magnetosphere focus group will hold a mini GEM workshop session at the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (50 Third St.) on Sunday Dec. 13, 2009 from 12:00 to 1:30 PM. The purpose of the session is three-fold: 1). Plan activities and discuss focus issues for the 2010 Summer GEM Workshop 1). Present results/work out future directions for the Near Earth Magnetosphere Challenge 3). General presentations and discussion on topics relevant to the focus group An outline of the major topics of interest of the focus group can be found on the focus group Wiki at http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/FG8._Near_Earth_Magnetosphere:_p lasma%2C_fields%2C_and_coupling We welcome short presentations (3 slide max.) on any topic aligned with the 2 research fronts the focus group has been operating on: 1. Data-based/empirical models for fields and particles in the inner magnetosphere 2. Improvements in physics-based modeling, including coupling between plasma, electric and magnetic fields Please send us the title of your contribution at your earliest convenience at the email addresses listed above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.
