Mini-workshop Session for "GGCM Methods and Modules" focus group ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John Dorelli , Brian Sullivan , Mike Shay The GGCM Methods and Modules focus group will have a session at this year's GEM mini-workshop in San Francisco. The session will be held from 2:00-4:00 in the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel located at 50 third street. This focus group is set to expire after next summer's GEM meeting, so the discussion in San Francisco will revolve largely around how to ramp down and summarize our results for the rest of the GEM community; however, more general contributions on the following topics are also solicited: I. Physics of the electron dissipation region in recent large scale (or "open BC") PIC simulations. A. What determines the aspect ratio of the electron dissipation region? B. What is the role of the Hall effect in facilitating fast reconnection? C. What is the role of the electron dissipation mechanism in controlling the reconnection rate? D. What is the role of secondary island formation in controlling the reconnection rate? II. Scaling of reconnection in global MHD simulations. A. Is reconnection controlled by external boundary conditions or local plasma parameters? B. How does the reconnection physics scale with Lundquist number? C. How do we model collisionless reconnection physics in global codes? Please contact the conveners if you would like to participate. We strongly encourage you to be prepared for open discussion and refrain from preparing formal presentations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Solicitation of Contributions to the "Plasmasphere-Magnetosphere Interactions" focus group session at the GEM 2009 Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Focus Group co-chairs: Jerry Goldstein (jgoldstein AT swri.edu), Maria Spasojevic (mariaspasojevic AT stanford.edu), Joe Borovsky (jborovsky AT lanl.gov) The Plasmasphere-Magnetosphere Interactions (PMI) focus group will hold a mini GEM workshop session: Date: Sunday 13 December 2009. PMI Session: 13:30-15:00 PST. Location: Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (50 Third St) We welcome short presentations (3 slide max.) related to the PMI focus group topics: + Wave-Particle Interactions + Plume Dynamics & Recirculation + Plasma Density Structure & Evolution. If you would like to present at this session, please e-mail your title to JGoldstein AT swri.edu. The focus group Wiki page is http://tinyurl.com/pmiFGwiki Pleasant travels to all, and see you at Fall AGU! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Special GEM-ULTIMA Forum on Ground Magnetometer Observations at GEM Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peter Chi Meeting: Special GEM-ULTIMA Forum & The 2009 ULTIMA General Meeting Location: Westin San Francisco Market Street Hotel, 50 Third St. Second-floor Cornell Room Time: 2:30-6:00pm, December 13, 2009 Ultra Large Terrestrial International Magnetometer Array (ULTIMA) is an international consortium that aims at promoting collaborative research on the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere through the use of ground-based magnetic field observations. Current ULTIMA members include the investigators from the following magnetometer arrays: AAIMNet (Australian), CARISMA, IGPP-LANL, MACCS, MAGDAS, McMAC, MEASURE, SAMBA, SEGMA, and THEMIS (GBO/EPO). More information about ULTIMA can be found at http://www.serc.kyushu-u.ac.jp/ultima/ultima.html . Since its establishment in 2006, ULTIMA has been holding general meetings on a yearly basis. Made possible by the GEM Steering Committee, the 2009 ULTIMA General Meeting will be held during the GEM Mini-workshop in order for this international consortium to interact with the vibrant GEM community in the United States. The special GEM-ULTIMA forum consists of two parts: The first half comprises status reports from magnetometer arrays as well as discussions on the operation of ULTIMA. The second half is focused on science presentations based mainly on ground magnetometer observations. This special forum is open to everyone. Magnetometer arrays that are not currently associated with ULTIMA are also welcome to participate and present. Requests of presentations can be addressed to the ULTIMA Secretary Peter Chi (pchi@igpp.ucla.edu). +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | |To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | |To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact Peter Chi at | | | |Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | |URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/GemWiki | |Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
