*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 20, Number 1 January 12, 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Technical University of Denmark takes over geomagnetic activities from the Danish Meteorological Institute ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Robert Claur The National Space Institute at the Technical University of Denmark has taken over the responsibility for the geomagnetic activities which the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has decided to discontinue. The National Space Institute is already the largest national user of geomagnetic ground based and satellite data, and it has the scientific competence as well as the necessary infrastructure in terms of technical laboratories and computer facilities to carry on the unique long time series of geomagnetic observations, in particular in Greenland. These activities are based on the strong involvement in the Danish satellite project Orsted and more recently, the ESA satellite mission, Swarm, to be launched in 2011. This scientific discipline has recently been strengthened by establishing a new professorship in Geophysics at the institute. The National Space Institute welcomes the inclusion of the ground based component to the traditionally space driven geomagnetic activities, both regarding observations and instrument production. We anticipate major synergetic benefits in science, data analysis, and instrument development, by which the institute in the future may contribute even more to the international scientific community and to the advancement of science and technology within the geomagnetic disciplines at large. We look forward to our continued and extended cooperation with the international community. Eigil Friis Christensen Director, National Space Institute ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. AGU Election ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jan Sojka Please take the time to VOTE for your future AGU leaders. Not just SPA leaders, but also the new AGU board members. Please vote, and since you cannot vote often, please encourage others to vote. Election closed February 3, 2010. The candidates' bios are in the EOS issue of 22 December 2009 along with the photographs. The voting is open, hence please do it now! I did.
