*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 20, Number 23 June 30, 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GEM Steering Committee Membership Changes New at-large members and a new student representative ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mike Liemohn , Steering Committee Chair The GEM Steering Committee has several "at-large" members who represent the general GEM community and hopefully complement and balance the rest of the Steering Committee membership. This year, the 3-year terms of two at-large SC members ended: Maria Spasojevic and Terry Onsager. I would like to extend my whole-hearted thanks for their service to and leadership of GEM. I greatly appreciate their time and effort in making GEM what it is. At the GEM Steering Committee meeting last Friday, nominations and voting were conducted to fill these two positions. Now that they have accepted, I am pleased to announce that the two new at-large members of the GEM SC are Emma Spanswick of the University of Calgary and Elizabeth MacDonald of Los Alamos National Laboratory. Please join me in welcoming Emma and Liz into these positions. We look forward to working with them in the years ahead on guiding the direction of GEM. They will each serve a 3-year term beginning immediately and ending after the 2013 summer workshop. Additionally, the GEM Steering Committee has a student representative, who serves a 1-year term on the SC and also organizes all of the student activities at the workshop. After serving for a year, the student rep then serves a second year as a senior advisor to the newly-elected student rep. This year, the student rep was Brian Walsh of Boston University and the "senior advisor" student rep was Raluca Ilie of the University of Michigan. I would like to thank Raluca and Brian for all of their contributions to GEM. The meeting would not be the same without the involvement and leadership of students, and I greatly appreciate the work that these two have put in to making the GEM Workshop an inviting and enjoyable meeting for students. I am pleased to announce that Jennifer Kissinger from UCLA is the next GEM Student Representative. Brian Walsh will serve as the senior advisor student rep for the coming year. The student rep position is particularly important this year because GEM will be held jointly with CEDAR next summer, including joint student activities. Please join me in welcoming Jenni as the new student rep to the GEM SC. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | | To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | | To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact | | Peter Chi at | | | | Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | | GEM Messenger is also posted online via newsfeed at | | http://heliophysics.blogspot.com and | | http://www.facebook.com/heliophysics | | | | Back issues are available at ftp://igpp.ucla.edu/scratch/gem/ | | | | URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/GemWiki | | Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
