Changes in GGCM Descriptions in GEM Bylaws ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Slava Merkin for GEM Steering Committee The GEM steering committee would like to encourage those who are planning to submit GEM Focus Group proposals to consult the GEM bylaws (http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/GEM_Bylaws). In particular, recent additions include: 1. Definition and scope of the GGCM Research Area (under "Research Area Coordinators"). 2. Due date of the Focus Group proposals is one week before the AGU meeting (under "Focus Groups"). 3. Content and format of the Focus Group proposals (under "Focus Groups"). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Solicitation of Contributions to Magnetosheath Focus Group Session at the 2010 GEM Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steven Petrinec , Katariina Nykyri The Magnetosheath focus group will hold a mini GEM workshop session at the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (50 Third St.) in the City Room on Sunday Dec. 12, 2010 from 12:00 to 1:30 PM. For a full schedule of the mini-workshop see http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/MiniWorkshopSchedule_GEM2010_r3.pdf This focus group session discussion will include general presentations, and planning of activities for the 2011 joint GEM-CEDAR Workshop. Short presentations are welcome on any topic aligned with the goal and topics of this focus group. Primary Objectives of the Magnetosheath Focus Group: 1. To produce more comprehensive models of large scale magnetosheath flow and field patterns, and geometry of the magnetosheath region 2. To improve understanding of magnetosheath plasma instabilities and wave particle interactions: Spatial distribution and characteristics 3. To develop a better understanding of the effects on magnetospheric dynamics due to processes occurring in the magnetosheath and due to characteristic magnetosheath properties Please send us the title of your contribution at the email addresses listed above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Mini-workshop Session for "GGCM Metrics and Validation" Focus Group ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Masha Kuznetsova , Aaron Ridley The GGCM Metrics and Validation focus group will have a session at this year's GEM mini-workshop in San Francisco. The session will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 2:30-4:30pm in the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (second floor, Franciscan I Room) located at 50 Third Street. Topics for discussions: 1. GGCM Metrics Challenge status. 2. Dst Challenge results. 3. Auroral oval metrics study planning 4. Preparation to Summer Workshop. Ideas for joint GEM-CEDAR Metrics and Validation session. 5. Future plans. We invite short presentations with ideas on auroral oval metrics study and joint GEM-CEDAR M&V projects. If you are interested to present (1-3 slides) - please contact Masha Kuznetsova and Aaron Ridley. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Call for Presentations at GEM-ULTIMA Ground Magnetometer Forum at GEM Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peter Chi The upcoming GEM-ULTIMA Ground Magnetometer Forum is where lovers of ground magnetometers meet and exchange information and research ideas. Users of ground magnetometer data can find the latest information about magnetometer projects in the world and the observations they provide. The meeting will be held in Cornell Room at GEM Mini- workshop from 12:00pm to 4:30pm, Sunday, December 12, 2010. We still have a few time slots for presentations and welcome your contributions. Interested speakers can contact Peter Chi (pchi at igpp.ucla.edu) to be included in the presentation schedule. Below is the preliminary agenda including the confirmed speakers to date: 12:00pm-2:10pm: Community Presentations on Ground Magnetometers: Including Stations, Data, and Observations (~ 15 min/presentation) * Kiyohumi Yumoto - Data citations * Chi Wang - Chinese Meridian Project * Jeff Love - Intermagnet and its current work in developing 1-sec and quasi-definitive data products * Shuji Abe - IUGONET * Y. Yamazaki 2:10pm - 2:30pm: Break 2:30pm - 4:30pm: ULTIMA Reports and Operation * Welcome * Status reports from ULTIMA Members and Observers * ULTIMA Business Meeting: Elections, discussion of next meeting, and more ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.
