*************************** ** THE GEM MESSENGER ** *************************** Volume 20, Number 35 December 4, 2010 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mini-workshop Session on "Substorm Expansion Onset: The First 10 Minutes" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vassilis Angelopoulos, Kazuo Shiokawa, Shin Ohtani, and Andrei Runov The GEM Focus Group on "Substorm Expansion Onset: The First 10 Minutes" will have a session at the forthcoming 2010 GEM mini-workshop. Date: Sunday December 12 Time: 2:30 - 4:00 PM Place: City Room, Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (50 Third St.) For a full schedule of the mini-workshop see http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/MiniWorkshopSchedule_GEM2010_r3.pdf In the 2010 Summer Workshop we discussed substorm initiation processes focusing on four issues: 1. Onset timing in space and on the ground: observations/theory/simulations 2. How do midtail onset signatures propagate to near Earth and to the ground? 3. Ground-Space Mapping of Physical Processes 4. Substorm processes near transition between stretched and dipole field lines. All presentations in this focus group were summarized into a matrix showing correspondence of each observation/model result to various substorm-onset physical models. The matrix is available at the GEM Wiki page (http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/FG12._Substorm_Expansion_Onset:_The_First_10_Minutes). At the mini-workshop we will discuss the current status of studies on these issues, the observations vs. models matrix, and will identify issues to discuss at the 2011 Summer Workshop. We invite community members who are interested in any of those items to participate in discussion, and we welcome suggestions for future of our focus group. Those who are interested in making a brief presentation with one or two viewgraphs are encouraged to contact the conveners for advanced scheduling. Please also contact the conveners for additional information. We are looking forward to see you in San Francisco Vassilis Angelopoulos Kazuo Shiokawa Shin Ohtani Andrei Runov +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | | To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | | To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact | | Peter Chi at | | | | Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | | GEM Messenger is also posted online via newsfeed at | | http://heliophysics.blogspot.com and | | http://www.facebook.com/heliophysics | | | | Back issues are available at ftp://igpp.ucla.edu/scratch/gem/ | | | | URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki | | Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
