Special GEM-ULTIMA Forum on Ground Magnetometer Observations at 2011 GEM Mini-workshop ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peter Chi A special GEM-ULTIMA Forum and the 2011 ULTIMA General Meeting will be held together at the GEM Mini-workshop in San Francisco from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Sunday, December 4. This joint meeting consists of two sessions: The first session is devoted to science presentations based mainly on ground magnetometer observations, and the second session is focused on reports from magnetometer arrays and discussions of ULTIMA operation. The meeting time and location can be found in the GEM Mini-workshop schedule at: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/MiniWorkshopSchedule_GEM2011.pdf Established in 2006, Ultra Large Terrestrial International Magnetometer Array (ULTIMA) is an international consortium that aims at promoting collaborative research on the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere through the use of ground-based magnetic field observations. The current ULTIMA members include the investigators of the following magnetometer arrays: AAIMNet (Australian), AUTUMN, CARISMA, IGPP-LANL, IMAGE, MACCS, MAGDAS, McMAC, MEASURE, SAMBA, SEGMA, and THEMIS (GBO/EPO). More information about ULTIMA can be found at http://www.serc.kyushu-u.ac.jp/ultima/ultima.html . This special forum is open to all the members of GEM and other interested parties. Magnetometer teams that are not currently affiliated with ULTIMA are encouraged to participate. Requests of presentations can be addressed to Peter Chi (pchi at igpp.ucla.edu), the Secretary of ULTIMA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. GEM Mini-workshop Session on "The Near Earth Magnetosphere" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Stan Sazykin , Sorin Zaharia , Benoit Lavraud The Near Earth Magnetosphere focus group will hold a mini GEM workshop session at the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (50 Third St.) on Sunday Dec. 4, 2011 from noon to 2:00 PM, in the Cornell room. For a full schedule of the mini-workshop see http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/MiniWorkshopSchedule_GEM2011.pdf We would like to invite the community to participate in our session, which will include discussions on: 1) planning of activities for the 2012 summer GEM Workshop (last workshop of the focus group), 2) wrap-up of focus group efforts/avenues for documenting the various inner magnetospheric modules with their current status of development. We also welcome short presentations on any topic aligned with the focus group interests, as detailed at http://www- ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/FG8._Near_Earth_Magnetosphere:_pla sma%2C_fields%2C_and_coupling#Potential_Research_Topics Please send us the title of your contribution at the email addresses listed above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Sharing Heliophysics Undergraduate Resources: Identifying Challenges in the Solar and Space Physics Science Classroom and Their Solutions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Nicholas Gross As part of the NASA Heliophysics Science Education Forum, we are putting together another workshop just prior to AGU for undergraduate teaching faculty in planetary science. The workshop will be held the Sunday before AGU, December 4th, at the Parc 55, San Francisco Union Square from 1:00-5:30 p.m. Our goal is to have participants identify one content challenge they faced when teaching a particular course and how they solved it. Participants would then present both the challenge and the resource they used - whether they developed it themselves or borrowed it from another source. It might be a specific demo, activity or animation used to convey a specific concept. We are working to include post-docs, etc. who will be the next generation of solar and space physics faculty. Please feel free to send this on to interested students or early career scientists. The new Higher Education Clearinghouse (HECl), a place where you can share your classroom materials, is ready to debut! It has all of the features that many of you identified at previous workshops and through the faculty survey. We want to use it at during the workshop to show how it can be used to share the materials people present. We are hoping that you can attend the December's workshop! Bring a classroom asset to present! RVSP to Emily CoBabe-Ammann at ecobabe@spaceeducation.org Sincerely, Emily A.
