GEM Mini-workshop Session on "Magnetic Mapping" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Elizabeth MacDonald , Robyn Millan , and Eric Donovan The Scientific Magnetic Mapping and Techniques focus group will hold a mini GEM workshop session at the Westin San Francisco Market Street hotel (50 Third St.) on Sunday Dec. 4, 2011 from 2:30 to 4:30 PM, in the Franciscan I room. For a full schedule please see the wikisite here (http://bit.ly/uspiyE). We would like to invite the community to participate in our session, by simply adding input to our survey forms on Mapping Science questions (http://bit.ly/vYuGc5) and Mapping Techniques (http://bit.ly/ucmMLQ). The survey results will be discussed at the mini-GEM and form the basis for planning of activities for the 2012 summer GEM Workshop. They will also be posted online (http://bit.ly/vPLlv9, http://bit.ly/uFw8Uz). We also welcome 1 slide presentations on specific questions or techniques if you wish. We look forward to a productive discussion and thank you for your input in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. HAO/ASP Postdoctoral Fellowship ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: R. Casini, HAO The High Altitude Observatory (HAO) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) announces the 2012 competition for the ASP/HAO Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. HAO conducts research in the areas of solar physics (solar MHD, dynamo theory, magnetic flux emergence, spectro-polarimetry, radiative transfer, energy transport in the solar atmosphere, solar eruptions), and in terrestrial physics (energetic, dynamics and chemistry of the Earth's middle and upper atmosphere, ionosphere electrodynamics, magnetospheric physics, space weather). HAO pursues its research goals through broad programs in theory, modeling, observations, and instrumentation. Postdoc appointments are for one year, renewable for a second year depending on performance. The interested candidate must apply through the Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program of the NCAR Advanced Study Program (ASP). See http://www.asp.ucar.edu/pdfp/pd_announcement.php for instructions and a list of the application material. The deadline is January 5th, 2012. For further information please visit also http://www.hao.ucar.edu/people/visitors/postdoc.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. HAO/Newkirk Graduate Research Fellowship ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: R. Casini, HAO The High Altitude Observatory (HAO) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) announces the 2012 competition for one graduate research position under the Newkirk Fellowship Program. The Newkirk Fellowship is named in honor of former HAO director Gordon A. Newkirk Jr. Eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply can be found at http://www.hao.ucar.edu/people/visitors/newkirk.php. The deadline for the submission of the application material is January 6th, 2012. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | | To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | | To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact | | Peter Chi at | | | | Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | | GEM Messenger is also posted online via newsfeed at | | http://heliophysics.blogspot.com and | | http://www.facebook.com/heliophysics | | | | Back issues are available at ftp://igpp.ucla.edu/scratch/gem/ | | | | URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki | | Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
