Call for Participation at 2012 GEM Workshop: GGCM Modeling Challenge on Wednesday at 10:30 am ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Masha Kuznetsova , Aaron Ridley The GGCM Metrics and Validation focus group will have two sessions on Wednesday June 20 at this year's GEM Summer Workshop at Snowmass: 10:30 am - 12:15 pm: "GGCM Modeling Challenge" (M. Kuznetsova, A. Ridley) 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm: "Measuring Models Climatologically" (T. Guild, L. Rastaetter, H. Singer) - session description in May 31 GEM Messenger. Tentative agenda and topics for discussions for the "GGCM Modeling Challenge" session: 1. Operational geospace model validation I: Evaluating geospace models ability to forecast time-derivative of ground magnetic perturbations dB/dt. Details of the project and dB/dt time series derived from model outputs can be found at http://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/challenges/dBdt/index.php (50 min) a. dB/dt calculation from model outputs, visualization and analysis tools/L. Rastaetter b. dB/dt metrics results/ A. Pulkkinen c. Discussion: Report/paper preparation. Next steps. 2. Operational geospace model validation II: Geomagnetic activity index (35 min) a. NOAA SWPC needs for regional geomagnetic activity index prediction/H. Singer b. Discussions: How to derive geomagnetic activity index from model outputs. Metrics format selection 3. Future planning (20 min) a. GGCM Metrics Challenges status. b. M&V Focus Group leadership transition. Mid-term report preparation. c. GEM-CEDAR Challenge: Ionosphere Joule heating and Auroral oval boundaries session at the pre-AGU mini-workshop. d. Action plan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Call for Participation at 2012 GEM Workshop: CCMC Tutorial Session on Wednesday at 3:30 pm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Masha Kuznetsova The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) is arranging a special CCMC tutorial session at the GEM summer Workshop (Wednesday, 3:30 pm) to demonstrate CCMC tools and services and to collect feedback from the GEM Community. GEM Focus Group representatives are invited to discuss their FGs needs and present ideas on how the CCMC can support FGs projects. David Berrios will present a tutorial on how to use a Java 3D advance visualization tool and the Integrated Space Weather Analysis system. Lutz Rastaetter will demonstrate on- line tools developed in support of community-wide modeling challenges. Emily Hyatt, the winner of the CCMC Student Research Contest, will give a demo-presentation "How I used CCMC tools in my research". Participants are encouraged to bring laptops for hands-on experience. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | | To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | | To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact | | Peter Chi at | | | | Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | | GEM Messenger is also posted online via newsfeed at | | http://heliophysics.blogspot.com and | | http://www.facebook.com/heliophysics | | | | Back issues are available at ftp://igpp.ucla.edu/scratch/gem/ | | | | URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki | | Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
