The focus group agenda for this mini-GEM workshop includes: 1) geospace model evaluation progress and new results for regional geomagnetic activity predictions; 2) innovative methods for model validation, including climatology; and 3) brainstorming and planning for collaboration with modeling activities in other focus groups. We therefore solicit ideas and short presentations of any topics relevant to Metrics and Validation generally and the agenda topics specifically on Sunday, December 2nd, between 12 and 2PM in the Franciscan II Room at the Westin San Francisco. We welcome ideas that stimulate participant discussion. While in the spirit of GEM we welcome people to just show up with a viewgraph or two, for organizational purposes it will help if you please email the session conveners your name and a brief title. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. 2012 Mini-GEM Session: Tail Inner-magnetosphere interactions Focus Group ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: John Lyon and Frank Toffoletto The GEM Tail inner magnetosphere interactions focus group will be having a meeting at the 2012 GEM mini-workshop on Sunday, December 2, from 2:30-4:30. Participants are invited to make a short presentation and to participate in the discussion and planning for the upcoming summer workshop. If you wish to make a presentation, please email us so we can put you on the schedule. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco. Again this year the Planetary section along with the Space Physics and Aeronomy section will hold the Space Science Student-Scientist Mixer at the Fall AGU meeting in San Francisco. This is an opportunity for students attending AGU to speak with working scientists at all stages in their careers and doing a wide variety of work. The two hour event will take place on Sunday Dec. 2nd, starting at 7pm in the “Club Room” at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. During the first hour, students will have an opportunity to chat with working scientists on an individual bases about their career experiences and plans, life as a working scientists, and the future of the field. During this hour food and a cash bar will be available. For the second portion of the event, the Planetary and Space Physics groups will break up in to separate rooms for a panel discussion prompted by student questions. This is a not a ticketed event so just come by and talk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Three Ph.D-scholarships Available for 2013 Selection in Space Physics area in Embry-Riddle Engineering Physics Ph.D program ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Anatoly Streltsov The Department of Physical Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) at Daytona Beach, FL invites applicants for 2013 Ph.D. graduate study program in the field of space plasma physics. The program includes full funding (20,000 USD stipend plus free tuition), training and education of up to 3 candidates in the fields of space plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamics, and electromagnetism. It focuses on preparation of young scientists for development of comprehensive geophysical models and highly efficient numerical algorithms describing electromagnetic waves and wave-particle interactions in the Earth’s magnetosphere and the ionosphere and utilizing and developing techniques for analyzing single and multi-spacecraft data. Students will apply results from their educational/research projects for interpretation of geophysical data collected by ground stations and satellites in several high-profile NASA and NSF programs, such as Space Weather Forecast, Radiation Belts Remediation and Active Ionospheric Experiments. Currently the Aviation and Aerospace Engineering Program at Embry-Riddle is ranked #1 in the USA by US News, and the Physics Department provides excellent conditions for studying modern geophysics including a high-performance computational facility on campus.
