Request for Participation: GEM-CEDAR Workshop 2013 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Larry Lyons The Organizing Committee is soliciting contributions to and participation in a coordinated GEM-CEDAR workshop that is directed toward motivating progress in understanding the very many aspects of the Geospace environment that involve the full Magnetosphere- Ionosphere-Thermosphere (MIT) system and towards encouraging continued coordinated GEM-CEDAR activity for the future. The workshop will be held the weekend between GEM and CEDAR, Sat-Sun June 22-23, 2013, in Boulder, CO. Some activities related to the workshop may extend to the first day of CEDAR, June 24, which will be held at the same venue. A description of the motivation and goals of the workshop, as well as a list of topics to guide presentations and discussion, are available at: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/2013_GEM-CEDAR_Workshop http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/2013_Workshop:GEM- CEDAR_Workshop. (Editor's Note: A PDF copy is also available online at: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/Description_GEM-CEDAR.pdf) The workshop schedule will consist of invited presentations, short contributed talks, and extended discussions about present understanding and future directions. Please send your desire to participate in the workshop to Larry Lyons (larry at atmos.ucla.edu), chair of the organizing committee, by March 20, 2013. If you would like to give a contributed presentation, please include a statement identifying the main topic (A-E) from the attached list and a draft title. We would like to maintain a lively workshop atmosphere, so contributed talks should be limited to only a handful of slides. Students and post-docs are particularly encouraged to attend. Confirmed invited participants are: Nick Omidi, Drew Turner, Delores Knipp, Yue Deng, Per Even Sandholt, Anthea Coster, Stefan Eriksson, Bob Lysak, Shasha Zou, Chih-Ping Wang, Yongliang Zhag, Joe Huba, Bela Fejer, Yuri Shprits, Vania Jordanova, Howard Singer, Mike Rouhoniemi, Art Richmond, Yihua Zheng, Lutz Raestatter, and Astrid Maute. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Call for Papers for a Virtual Special Issue of Geophysical Research Letters on: "Early Results from the Van Allen Probes" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill Peterson and Benoit Lavraud Geophysical Research Letters solicits papers presenting high impact innovative results with broad geophysical implications for a virtual special issue on "Early Results from the Van Allen Probes." NASA's Van Allen Probes mission is designed to acquire data to solve key questions about the energetics and dynamics of the Earth's Van Allen Radiation belts that have arisen from active research in the domain in the past decades. Papers should address fundamental aspects of the energetics and dynamics of the Van Allen Radiation belts and meet the GRL criteria of high impact innovative results with broad geophysical implications as described in EOS Vol. 91, No. 38, 21 September 2010, page 337. They should be submitted to GRL using AGU’s GEMS interface (http://grl- submit.agu.org/cgi-bin/main.plex by November 1, 2013 to be considered for inclusion in the virtual special issue. Papers will be treated and selected as any other submission to GRL. Accepted papers will appear in the on-line version of GRL shortly after acceptance, and in the first available print issue after that. The full virtual special issue will be accessible from the GRL main web page (now at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1944-8007 ) under the "Find Articles" list on the left tab entitled special Sections (which points to http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1944- 8007/homepage/SpecialSectionsHome.html W.K. (Bill) Peterson and Benoit Lavraud Space Physics Editors of GRL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Faculty Position in Space Physics University of California, Los Angeles ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Emmanuel Masongsong The Department of Earth and Space Sciences seeks candidates for a tenured, or tenure track faculty appointment in Space Physics. Applicants with a PhD from all disciplines are invited, but preference will be given to candidates with a broad background in the physics of flowing magnetized plasmas in the heliosphere. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen the department's role in ongoing and future space missions through scientific leadership in theory, modeling and/or observations, and through the department’s undergraduate/graduate student instruction and mentorship. Applications for all levels will be considered. Appointment and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Please include curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching interests, a complete list of publications, names and email addresses of three referees, electronic or paper copies of up to five of your most significant publications, plus a short cover letter addressing your experience. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer, and has a commitment to enhance diversity in the geosciences and space science at UCLA. Women and underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply. For more information about UCLA's policies on hiring and academic diversity please see https://faculty.diversity.ucla.edu. All applications received on or before April 6, 2013 will be considered. Please email your application to space2013@ess.ucla.edu, reference job: 0995-1213-01. An optional hardcopy of materials may be mailed to: Space Physics Search Committee, UCLA Earth and Space Sciences, 595 Charles Young Drive East, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1567. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | To subscribe GEM Messengers, send an e-mail to | | | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | | To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | | To broadcast a message to the GEM community, please contact | | Peter Chi at | | | | Please use plain text as the format of your submission. | | | | GEM Messenger is also posted online via newsfeed at | | http://heliophysics.blogspot.com and | | http://www.facebook.com/heliophysics | | | | Back issues are available at ftp://igpp.ucla.edu/scratch/gem/ | | | | URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki | | Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
