JOB OPENING: Professor/Associate Professor in Space Physics ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Nikolai Østgaard" The Space Physics group at the Department of Physics and Technology, University of Bergen (UB) has now an open position at the Professor level. The position will be part of the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS), one of the newly established Centre of Excellence. BCSS was established on March 1, 2013, with substantial funding for the next 5 years, and following a positive outcome of a mid term evaluation the funding will be extended for another 5 years. BCSS consists of the space physics groups at UB, Norwegian University of Science and Technolgy (NTNU) and the University Centre at Svalbard (UNIS) and is lead by UB. BCSS is organized in two instrument groups, one Education and Public Outreach group, and four research groups, which will address the following scientific questions: Q1) When and why is the aurora in the two hemispheres asymmetric? Q2) How do we get beyond the static large scale picture of the ionosphere? Q3) What are the effects of particle precipitation on the atmospheric system? Q4) What is the role of energetic particles from thunderstorms in geospace? The space physics group at UB has been involved in designing and building of detectors and readout electronics for many decades, and has now a close collaboration with the micro-electronics group at the Department of Physics and Technology. We have designed and built payloads and instruments for balloons, rockets and satellites, and were heavily involved in instruments flying on Polar, INTEGRAL and SIR-2. This activity is now organized in the space instrumentation group of BCSS at UB. Currently we are building a large X- and gamma- ray detector for ASIM, which will be flown on the International Space Station in 2016. We are also building smaller X- and gamma-ray detectors that will fly on balloons (COBRAT) and aircraft campaigns. For this Professor position we are looking for a candidate to lead Research group 2 of BCSS. This group focuses on ionospheric dynamics and will address question Q2. In addition to the new leader, this group has at the moment two Professors, one adjunct professor and three PhD students. The successful candidate should have a strong background in space physics, with special emphasis on the physics of the ionosphere. Furthermore, the successful candidate should document project and team management skills. Publication profile and ability to win grant proposals will also be evaluated. The candidate should also take part in the experimental efforts of BCSS. We are looking for a team builder that is creative and is able to take own initiatives. For further information about the position please contact Professor Nikolai Østgaard, phone (+47) 55 58 27 94; e-mail nikolai.ostgaard@ift.uib.no. Salary for professor will be in the range of 68–73 (code 1013) in the Civil Service pay grade table according to qualifications; currently NOK 572,700 - 631,400 gross p.a. Starting salary for associate professors is 57 (code 1011/pay framework 24.1); currently NOK 468,400 gross p.a. Automatic salary increases will occur at fixed intervals within the pay framework (wage range 57–65). The full description of this announcement as well as instructions for applicants can be fund at http://www.jobbnorge.no/ledige-stillinger/stilling/101582/professor- foersteamanuensis-i-romfysikk and the Application has to be submitted electronically through www.jobbnorge.no Closing date for applications: 15 May 2014 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. JOB OPENING: Space Weather Post-doctoral Position at NASA Goddard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Elizabeth MacDonald The New Mexico Consortium (www.newmexicoconsortium.org) seeks a space weather post-doctoral research associate for the innovative Aurorasaurus project (www.aurorasaurus.org). The postdoc will be located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Duties will include analysis of space weather data (specifically related to the prediction of the auroral oval during storm and substorm times), and associated citizen science and crowdsourced observations of aurora. Research will be aimed at developing a nowcast model of the aurora that incorporates human observations, validating the model, and testing ways to simply and accurately predict the auroral oval for the public. Robust programming and modeling experience, initiative, and a strong history of publications are required skills. Applications will be reviewed as soon as received and the position will be open until filled. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald (e.a.macdonald@nasa.gov) with any questions. New Mexico Consortium is an independent nonprofit EOE employer. Please apply online at www.newmexicoconsortium.org/about/application and include a CV, cover letter, code sample, and 3 recommendation letters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. PhD Positions within Space and Plasma Science at the University of Oslo, Norway ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Wojciech J. Miloch Dear colleagues, Five PhD positions are available at the University of Oslo, Norway, with the application deadline 20 April 2014. Please distribute this information if you think it could reach potential candidates! The positions are part of the interdisciplinary 4DSpace centre, combining Departments of Physics, Informatics, and Mathematics. 4DSpace is an interdisciplinary space science centre working towards integrated studies of ionospheric turbulence with multi-point, multi- scale studies with a new generation of sounding rockets and satellites, and cutting edge numerical and analytical models. The centre is active with in-situ measurements (such as the ICI-rocket series, CubeSTAR, or European Space Agency projects), ground-based observations, and development of instruments as well as miniaturised payloads and sub- payloads for rockets and satellites. The modelling of plasma instabilities and turbulence is carried out with fluid as well as particle-in-cell numerical codes. The following positions are available: PhD Research Fellow in Computational Plasma Physics PhD Research Fellow in Space and Plasma Physics PhD Research Fellow in Electronics (Probe and rocket payload development) PhD Research Fellow in Fluid Mechanics (MHD turbulence modeling) PhD Research Fellow in Integrated Circuits for Space Probes (nanoinformatics) For details and links to the application forms see our website: http://www.mn.uio.no/fysikk/english/research/projects/4dspace/ In case of any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
