Announcement from GEM IMCEPI Focus Group ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Yiqun Yu Dear Colleagues, At the 2014 GEM summer workshop held from June 16 to June 20 at Portsmouth VA, our new focus group “Inner magnetosphere cross- energy/population interactions (IMCEPI)” received good attendance and underwent three successful breakout sessions with very engaged and relaxed conversations and discussions. Therefore, we would like to create an email list in order to distribute information related to upcoming activities, to solicit challenge events that you are interested to participate, and also to welcome suggestions and remarks to our FG. If you would like to be part of the IMCEPI group, please send email to Yiqun Yu (yiqunyu17@gmail.com) with subject “subscribe IMCEPI”. You can also visit the following GEMwiki page to check out the details of our FG, including the goals of the FG, our recent activities or announcements: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/FG:_Inner_Magnetosphere_Cross-Energy/Population_Interactions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. AGU 2014 Fall Meeting Abstract Submission is Now Open ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Robyn Millan Abstract submission for the American Geophysical Union 2014 Fall Meeting (http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2014/) is now open! Go to http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2014/scientific-program/ for further information on abstract submission and policies. The abstract submission tool is new this year, so please read the tutorial before you begin. The abstract deadline is 6 August 2014, 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT; no late abstracts are accepted! Abstracts that do not fall within the scope of any of the special sessions are welcome in the SH, SM or SA “General contributions” sessions and, where possible, will be scheduled with papers on similar topics. Ian Richardson, SH Secretary (ian.g.richardson at nasa.gov), Robyn Millan, SM secretary (Robyn.M.Millan at dartmouth.edu) Larry Paxton, SA Secretary (larry.paxton at jhuapl.edu) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. AGU Fall Meeting Session: Impact of the Substorm Concept on Space Plasma Research ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tony Lui Session ID#: 2102 Session Title: Impact of the Substorm Concept on Space Plasma Research Session Description: This year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary on the inception of substorm concept. It is first revealed by episodic auroral activities in the polar regions. Substorm phenomena manifest the fundamental processes in space plasma dynamics and substorm-like disturbances have been found in many space plasma regions throughout our solar system. For example, such disturbances have been discovered in other planetary magnetospheres. The underlying physical processes responsible for substorms on Earth have been compared with those for solar flares and coronal mass ejections. This concept has motivated numerous studies on impulsive plasma phenomena in the investigation of solar terrestrial relations. This session invites research related to the impact of the substorm concept on present and past research efforts through data analysis, theory, and simulations of outstanding space plasma problems. JOB OPENING: Director of NCAR High Altitude Observatory ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mike Wiltberger NCAR's High Altitude Observatory seeks a new Director. See job announcement at https://ucar.silkroad.com/epostings/index.cfm?fuseaction=app.jobinfo&jobid=217531&company_id=15947&version=1&source=ONLINE&jobOwner=962105&aid=1 Consideration of qualified candidates will begin on Friday, August 1st and in-person interviews are anticipated to take place the week of September 15th, 2014. The HAO Director is responsible for the overall scientific and strategic mission, productivity, and excellence of the Observatory in the areas of solar and heliospheric physics, and the effects of solar variability on the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere. This includes HAO vision and mission leadership and management of the implementation of long- and short-term planning that supports the HAO and NCAR mission. The Director is also responsible for the effective management and administration of the Observatory. The Director fosters interaction and collaboration between NCAR, UCAR and UCAR Community Programs staff and programs. In addition, the Director is responsible for program advocacy in a number of forums including government agencies, UCAR member and non-member institutions and the scientific community at large. As a member of the NCAR Executive Committee and an NCAR Associate Director, the Director shares in NCAR management deliberations, offering on the behalf of HAO and NCAR advice on matters such as scientific goals, initiatives and standards, budgets, priorities, policies, programs, and other matters. +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | To broadcast announcements to the GEM community, please contact | | Peter Chi, GEM Communications Coordinator, at: | | | | | | Please submit your announcements in plain text or Word document. | | | | To subscribe the GEM Messenger, send an e-mail to | | | | with the following command in the body of your e-mail message: | | subscribe gem | | To remove yourself from the mailing list, the command is: | | unsubscribe gem | | | | GEM Messenger is also posted online via newsfeed at | | http://heliophysics.blogspot.com and | | http://www.facebook.com/heliophysics | | | | Back issues are available at: | | http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/messenger/ | | | | URL of GEM Home Page: http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki | | Workshop Information: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem/index.html | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
