--------------------------------------------------------------------- Announcement of GEM Mini-Workshops in San Fransisco, December 4, 1994 --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Harlan Spence (SPENCE@buasta.bu.edu) Dear Geospace Environment Modeling Participants and Interested Parties, The annual NSF/GEM mini-workshop will be taking place in conjunction with the upcoming Fall AGU meeting in San Fransisco. The meeting will be held at the Parc Fifty-Five Hotel on the Sunday afternoon preceding the AGU meeting (December 4th). The Parc Fifty-Five Hotel is approximately midway between Union Square and the Moscone Center, somewhat down Market Street toward the Civic Auditorium (between Fourth and Fifth). The Parc Fifty- Five is one of the hotels available through AGU housing; please consult the pertinent EOS issues for location details. We welcome oldtimers and newcomers alike who want to learn more about or contribute to the NSF GEM program. We have a total of three rooms during the afternoon for our meetings; each room will accomodate about thirty people. Two of the three active campaigns are convening (Boundary layer and Magnetotail/Substorm). Note that the Global Geospace Convection Model Campaign will NOT be convening a session at this mini-worskhop. Also note that only two of the three working groups of each campaign will meet (WG's 1 and 3 of the Boundary Layer Campaign; and WG's 1 amd 2 of the Magnetotail/Substorm Campaign). The following schedule has been arranged for the afternoon of the 4th: ************************************************************************ Time Campaign/Working Group (co-chairs) ---- ---------------------------------- BOUNDARY LAYER 1:00-2:50 WG#1 (Lyons/Maynard) "Reconnection E-Field and Magnetopause Boundary Normal B-Field" 1:00-2:50 and WG#3 (Crooker/Friis-Christensen) 3:10-5:00 "Current Systems and Mapping" MAGNETOTAIL/SUBSTORM 3:10-5:00 WG#1 (Lyons/Maynard) "Substorm Onset Signatures: Identification, Location, and Timing" 3:10-5:00 WG#2 (Onsager/Spence) "Substorm/Tail Phenomenology: Observations and Models" **************************************************************************** Room locations and further details will be reported as they become available. The chairs of each of the participating working groups (WGs) will announce their formats and agenda over the next week or so. Each room will have an overhead projector and screen available; slide projectors/VCRs/etc. will require a special request to one of the chairs on your part if the need arises. Refreshments will be available during the afternoon break (2:50 - 3:10). Hope to see you in San Fransisco!
